The Yukon

Yukon Species

  • Birding in the Yukon is all about big wilderness and incredible migrations. In the short but intense summer, you’ll see shorebirds, warblers, and waterfowl returning to breed under nearly endless daylight. The Tintina Trench, a major migration corridor, brings in thousands of birds, including Sandhill Cranes in huge flocks. Winter birding is quieter but rewarding, with hardy species like the Boreal Owl and Common Redpoll sticking around.

  • More than 340 species of birds can be found in the Yukon.

  • The Raven is the provincial bird

Clubs and Organizations

  • The Yukon Bird Club is the most active birding group in the Yukon. They host interesting guest speakers as well as outdoor events, hikes, and workshops.

Nunavut Species

  • Birding in Nunavut is all about the Arctic—vast, wild, and unpredictable. Summers bring a burst of life, with seabird colonies packed with Thick-billed Murres, Black-legged Kittiwakes, and Northern Fulmars. Tundra ponds fill with King Eiders and Red-throated Loons, while jaegers and Snowy Owls patrol the open landscape. Only three species, the Raven, the Snowy Owl and the Rock Ptarmigan, are permanent, year-round residents.

  • Over 250 species of birds can be found in Nunavut.

  • The Rock Ptarmigan is the provincial bird.

Clubs and Organizations

  • Birding Nunavut has a Facebook page, but it is private, so I am unsure of the content and you would need to request to join.
